Partington is a civil parish town in Manchester, under the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford. South-west of Manchester, Partington was historically a part of Cheshire and is situated on the southern bank of the Manchester Ship Canal, facing Cadishead that sits on the northern bank.

The first factory in Trafford was built in Partington a quarter of a century ago, and was an old paper mill. Upon the completion of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, Partington became a major coal-exporting port, attracting a range of other industries, propelling the town into a significant industrial centre.

Shortly after the Second World War, the local authorities made an effort to rehouse the towns people away from the Victorian slums in inner-city Manchester, and an area of Partington extended as an overspill estate, however this has since become one of the most deprived areas of Greater Manchester. Thee Cheshire Lines Committee opened a railway line through Partington in 1873 but closed in 1964.
